Pengelolaan Forum Diplomasi Budaya: Mendorong Peran Kebudayaan dalam Pembangunan Global
12 Februari 2025
Project Summary and Impact
We have been active in various global cultural diplomacy initiatives, particularly in designing and managing strategic forums that strengthen the role of culture in sustainable development. One of our key engagements was in the 2016 World Culture Forum, which highlighted the importance of culture as a key element in the global development agenda.
Since then, we have continued to contribute to the formulation of the cultural diplomacy agenda, including through the 2020 Public Intellectual Forum, which brought together cultural scholars from various countries to respond to post-pandemic global challenges. This forum served as a platform for exchanging ideas on the role of culture in addressing social, economic, and political changes in the digital era.
In 2022, we participated in the agenda development of the G20 Culture Ministers Meeting, which highlighted the theme of sustainable lifestyles based on biocultural diversity as a key development asset. This discourse was then continued at Mondiacult 2023 in Mexico, where culture was positioned as a global public good, affirming that cultural heritage and expression must be recognized as universal rights that must be safeguarded and developed collectively.
The impacts of these initiatives include:
- Increasing global awareness of the role of culture in sustainable development.
- Providing a collaborative platform for academics and cultural practitioners to discuss and advocate for culture-based policies.
- Integration of culture into global policies, enabling more countries to adopt a culture-based approach in their national development strategies.
- Strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy, emphasizing Indonesia’s role in promoting culture as a fundamental element in international diplomacy.
How Do We Do It?
In every forum we manage, our approach is based on the principles of collaboration, participation, and policy relevance. Here are the main steps we take in managing cultural diplomacy forums:
- Agenda Setting and Policy Research
Before each forum, we conduct in-depth research on global trends related to culture and development. This helps us identify relevant themes and ensures that the forum has a real impact on international policy. - Stakeholder Engagement
We collaborate with governments, academics, cultural organizations, and the international community to ensure that each forum reflects diverse perspectives. This allows for a richer and more relevant exchange of ideas on global challenges. - Implementation of Multi-Party Forums and Discussions
Each forum is designed to foster open and inclusive dialogue. At the 2016 World Culture Forum, for example, we hosted panel discussions addressing various aspects of culture’s role in sustainable development, including cultural ecology, the creative economy, and cultural diplomacy. - Policy Advocacy and Implementation of Forum Results
We ensure that the forum’s outcomes go beyond discussion and are translated into policy recommendations. At the 2022 G20 Culture Ministers Meeting, we contributed to the formulation of a declaration affirming the importance of biocultural diversity in supporting global sustainability. - Continuation of the Discourse to Other Global Forums
As part of our long-term strategy, we support the continuation of cultural discourse in other international forums. The concept of culture as a global public good, first raised at the G20, was then carried over to Mondiacult 2023 in Mexico, reinforcing the position of culture as a common human right.
